Eats and Treats

One of my favorite things about the Cape is that there are so many different restaurants. Everywhere you go, you can find one within five minutes of you. What’s even better is that most of these restaurants are locally owned, so if you don’t happen to be a local Cape Codder like me, you can still get the experience as a tourist.

The first type of restaurant happens to be my favorite—breakfast! I have always loved breakfast and every time that I would go out for it, I would order chocolate chip pancakes with a side of home fries. This is usually what I order now. But, I also love waffles and french toast and breakfast sandwiches, so sometimes I switch it up. Some of my favorite restaurants to order these at are Grumpy’s, Homeport, Red Roof Cottage, Hole in One, Cafe Alfresco, and Sesuit Harbor Cafe. Several times over the summer I went out for breakfast craving the mouth-watering cinnamon bun french toast. Now, if you haven’t tried this, you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s the best type of french toast out there. I first discovered this delicious meal at Grumpy’s in Dennis, but when I went, I couldn’t find it on the menu. So, my mom found the Red Roof Cottage that’s within a 10-minute drive from Grumpy’s and they had my cinnamon bun french toast. When I tell you that it’s life-changing, it’s because it is. Sitting at the counter, I got to watch the chef make it for me.

I’m not sure what bakeries fall under because they are breakfast, but not necessarily a restaurant. So, I’m making a separate category for them because they deserve it. Now, I only know of two bakeries—Eat Cake 4 Breakfast and the Underground Bakery. They are delicious, to say the least. Eat Cake 4 Breakfast is known for its Brewster Buns. I would describe them as a cross between a cinnamon bun and a croissant. If you are ever in Brewster, you need to stop by and order some. But, you have to get there really early because the line gets very long very fast.

Over the years, my family has ventured out to try many different traditional lunch and dinner-style restaurants. My family’s favorites are Rock Harbor Grill and Land Ho, both located in Orleans. Rock Harbor Grill is a restaurant while Land Ho is more of a pub. My family loves Rock Harbor—as we call it—because of their amazing pretzel appetizers. Every time, without fail, my uncle always asks our server for them and my cousins get so annoyed with him because you don’t have to order them, they are complementary. But, recently we found out that you actually have to order them now. My family enjoys eating at Land Ho because of its pub-like atmosphere. When you walk in, random license plates and signs are hanging everywhere—and I mean everywhere. But, if you are looking for more of a family-friendly restaurant, JT’s Seafood, Kream N’ Kone, Mac’s Seafood, Laurino’s, and Land Ho are some of the best.

Over the summer, my family went to Chapin’s Bayside for the first time to celebrate my grandmother’s birthday. It’s about a 2-minute drive from Chapin’s Bayside Beach. I really liked the restaurant. It’s very similar to Rock Harbor Grill. I ordered the Bayside Burger, which is a bacon cheeseburger on a brioche bun with fries. It’s one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. More restaurants like this are the Marshside, Scargo Cafe, and Blue Island Crab.

Thank you for reading and stay tuned for my next post about shopping!

  1. I really enjoyed reading this! I really enjoyed the fact that you put the actual links to the restaurants and places you went. I will definitely keep these places in mind when I head down there over the summer!

  2. I definitely should’ve known better, Mackenzie: Reading your posts while I’m hungry is a deadly combo! I love all of the spots you shared with us–and how you visited them yourself and can speak from experience. I have this (very uneducated) image of the Cape having a few spots here and there and that’s it–and the entire planet crowds into them. However, your blog over the years has shown me how it’s brimming with lots of Mom and Pop restaurants and ice cream shops. Thanks for another great take on some of your faves! Excuse me while I go eat now…
